My name is Firoozeh Bairami and I am a PhD candidate in health at Dalhousie University. My research mainly focuses on health equity, aging and health policy. Using mixed-methods research, I study how social policies impact the health and well-being of vulnerable populations. I am also working as a research assistant with the STIC Lab, where I work on projects focused on health equity and access to healthcare for children with medical complexity in the Maritimes.
Conducting research in health policy means recognizing that producing evidence is only the first step. For research to inform policy and practice, it must be communicated well and effectively to a wide range of audiences. This is what motivated me to apply to Dalhousie’s OpenThink program, and I am excited to share that I have been selected as an OpenThink Scholar.
Through OpenThink, I have been learning how to communicate research in a way that is clear, engaging, and accessible. The program has challenged me to think beyond academic audiences and consider how research can inform decision-making and contribute to positive changes in society.
Through the program, I hope to strengthen my science communication and knowledge mobilization skills and apply what I learn to both my PhD research on healthy aging and social policy, as well as my work with the STIC Lab, where we seek to improve healthcare access for children with medical complexity. I hope these skills will help to make sure that the evidence we produce through research findings reaches the people who can use it to improve policy, practice and health outcomes.
